Internship Opportunity for Environmental Students:

20+ Acre Wetland & Forest Restoration 

The Madison Environmental Commission seeks two students to assist with removal of invasive species, planting of native species, and building habitat for small mammals, birds, insects, and amphibians.  There is also room to develop creative artistic displays using natural materials found onsite, photojournalism, and GIS mapping.  

Project description:
The project covers 20-acres of which 5-acres are NJDEP regulated wetlands and the surrounding 15-acre forest.  Position hours are 8am-12N Monday – Friday with a Thursday afternoon session at The Madison Farmers Market 1pm-4pm. Pay is $9.00 per hour.

Student Duties will include:

Physical hands on labor
Use of hand tools
Removal of Invasive Species
Trail clearing
Planting native species
Establishing brush piles

Student impact: 

Student will learn how to
control deer in public lands
eliminate invasive plants
renew wetlands
renew forest with native plants
proper planting techniques
proper site placement of plants
habitat design for amphibians, birds, and small mammals
build forest gardens supplying food for human consumption utilizing forest edges
design attraction gardens for butterflies, birds, and other pollinators 
principles of aquifer recharge through use of rain gardens and vernal pools.

The Madison Environmental Commission will work with students to document work and fulfill required curriculum goals to receive course credit.

School Crossing Guards:
The Borough of Madison is now accepting applications for the position of School Crossing Guard. The position is a part-time position (approximately 10 hours/week) with a salary range of $16.31-$18.31 per hour. No benefits.
