Mayor's Wellness Campaign

From the State Site:
The mission of the Mayors Wellness Campaign is to equip mayors and other key leaders with the tools to develop and implement active-living initiatives in their communities with the ultimate goal of improving health and reducing the skyrocketing health care costs that come with the obesity problem in New Jersey.

Across New Jersey, people are getting sick and literally dying from obesity-related conditions. The problem is particularly acute in children. Recent studies link childhood obesity to a disturbing prediction: the current generation of children in America may have a shorter life expectancy than their parents.

Additionally, Americans are spending billions each year on obesity-related illnesses. If we do not work to reduce obesity among both children and adults in New Jersey, we will face a crisis of epidemic proportions.

Here Are Some Hard Facts:
  • 57% of New Jersey residents are obese or overweight.
  • In 2001, medical expenses for treating problems related to obesity in our state totaled $2.3 billion.
