If you are going to install a solar or any type of self generation system, there are specific steps that need to be followed prior to installation, we ask that the following steps be taken to ensure a safe and reliable installation.

On July 9, 2012, the Madison Borough Council amended the Borough Code on the matter of 'Net Metering. Click here to review that Ordinance 13-2012.

First-please review our rules for customers with self generation with your design engineer.  To assure safety and the optimum value for both the Customer and the Municipal Utility, it is essential for the Customer to consult with the utility before purchasing, construction, operating, or interconnecting any self generation equipment to the system. No self-generating equipment may be connected to the Municipal Utility unless the Customer notifies the Municipal Utility and all necessary equipment, in the opinion of the Municipal Utility, is properly installed to isolate the generating equipment from the Municipal utility System.

Second-Download and complete Solar Plan Review Application ( Word or PDF ) Provide two sets of plans & specifications of the proposed system. These plans must include a single line electrical diagram showing all protective schemes.  Please return the completed applications along with a check for $500.00 to the Madison Electric Department for system review by Madison’s consulting Electrical Engineer.

Note: Madison does require an outside disconnect accessible to utility workers. The disconnect will allow for the solar generation system to be disconnected during emergency situations.

Third- Upon approval by the Borough’s Electric Consulting Engineer, customer must then apply for installation permits at the Construction Code Office.

Fourth-Upon final approval, all final inspections from the construction office, and payment for meter, a written interconnection agreement must be entered into with the Borough of Madison prior to connecting to the electric grid. Download and complete the Interconnection Application/ Agreement ( Word or  PDF ).

If you have any questions, please call the Water & Light Plant at- 973-966-7330 or 973-593-3090.
