Banners across Main Street

BECAUSE OF ANCHORING ISSUES, WE ARE NO LONGER OFFERING BANNERS ACROSS MAIN STREET.

Procedures for Main Street Banner for the Borough of Madison

Thank you for your interest in hanging a banner across Main Street in downtown Madison.  The banners are hung across Main Street (a state highway) and are suspended from two privately owned buildings at the corner of Main and Waverly.  There are certain procedures that must be followed because the State DOT and private property owners are involved.

Here are the steps.  Please know we are here to help!

Step 1

The first step is to verify that the space is available.  Please contact Jim Burnet at 973-593-8496 or at burnetj@rosenet.org to discuss.  You should give at least two months lead time in order to secure approvals and process the application.  Banners are hung for two weeks.

Step 2

Once space is confirmed, please provide us with a cover letter with the following information…

a)      Dates you would like the banner hung.

b)      Short explanation of the organization and the event that is being promoted.

c)      A full color, graphic design layout of the banner.  Please see banner specs below for more information.

Note that only non-commercial banners promoting community events and non-profit organizations are permitted.  No logos, brands, business names or political messages are allowed on the banner.

Once the request and design are approved, please continue with the following steps.

Step 3

Please complete and deliver to us three completed NJDOT applications (form MT-120a).  Application is attached.  Please fill out the yellow highlighted sections and sign and date the bottom of the form.

Step 4

Provide us with a check for $25 made payable to NJDOT for the permit fee and a check for $125 made payable to NJDOT for the banner fee.

Step 5

Please fill out, sign and deliver to us the three attached “Letters of Indemnity” for the private property owners and the Borough of Madison.

Step 6

Please provide us with four Certificates of Insurance.  The certificates should have a minimum of $2,000,000 Public Bodily Injury Liability per person/per occurrence and $1,000,000 property damage.

Banner Specs

The following banner specifications must be followed, or the banner will be rejected and not hung.  If you or your banner producer have any questions, please contact Jim Burnet.

Material: nylon filament core, a minimum of 18oz in thickness (thicker if possible), double sided material.  Grommets every 2 feet across the top and bottom of the banner.  For added strength, webbing (usually 1" wide) must be stitched into the banner on all four edges.  D-rings should be stitched into all four corners with reinforced stitching as shown below.

Approximately twenty large U shaped wind breaks should be cut into the banner as well.  Please have your banner maker contact us should you have any questions or alternate suggestions.

Banner Size & text:  Just ONE SIZE!

3’ x 25’ with a maximum of 2 lines of text

Lettering Size:  9” minimum and must be a very clear, readable font.  This is very important.

We suggest 15 words or less total on the banner.  The fewer the words the better.  The banner must also be TWO SIDED with text and information on both sides.

The banner must be delivered to Jim Burnet at least 5 days prior to being hung.

We realize that this may seem like a lot.  But it really should only take a few hours to complete the necessary steps.  Again, we are here to help.  Please call if you have any questions or need any additional information.

Sincerely,

Jim Burnet
