Today the Madison has a staff of 13 career firefighters. Minimum staffing requirements from Monday-Friday during daytime hours are 5 firefighters.
1st Fireman
The first “full time” member was known as the “steward.” The steward lived at the firehouse and were responsible for general custodial duties for the firehouse as well as being responsible for sounding the bell and answering the phone for alarms. The first steward was Edward Garrison. He started in 1882 and was steward until roughly 1887.
